Finns need more information about food sustainability

Published:

Only about 40 percent of Finns feel they receive clear information about the sustainability of food and drinks produced in Finland. This finding comes from a survey conducted by Finnish Food and Drink Industries' Federation (ETL) exploring public views of sustainability in the food sector.

Finns broadly value sustainability efforts within the food industry and see them as vital for companies’ future success. According to the survey, 71 percent of respondents believe that Finnish food industry is in tune with times and constantly evolving.

Food safety stands out as the most important sustainability theme among respondents, and Finnish food sector is seen to excel in this area.

However, other aspects of sustainability are seen as more difficult to evaluate. In particular, it is challenging to assess how food sector is addressing climate change and protecting biodiversity.

– We lack a consistent way to communicate the environmental impacts of food products, and that’s reflected in the responses. Food and drink companies are doing tremendous amount of work to advance these issues, yet 64 percent of Finns still find it difficult to assess the sustainability of food and beverages, says Satumaija Levón, Director of Sustainability at ETL.

Strong reputation

The survey also asked respondents to compare the perceived sustainability of different industries. Food and drink industry ranked very well: 74 percent of Finns consider the sector to operate responsibly.

– It’s encouraging to see that food industry’s long-term commitment to sustainability is recognized. Feedback from citizens provides an excellent foundation for further strengthening appreciation of Finnish food production, Levón says.
