The Finnish food industry has committed to the new Energy Efficiency Agreement on improving energy efficiency for the period 2026 to 2035.
Energy efficiency agreements are a voluntary jointly chosen mechanismby the government and industries to flexibly meet the obligations of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive in Finland. Voluntary agreements have been a successful way to promote energy efficiency in the food sector since 2008.
Long-term efforts and clear goals have resulted in significant energy savings and are driving the sector toward a more sustainable and smart energy use.
Following the current 2017-2025 agreement period, in which 54 food industry companies from across Finland are participating, 16 companies have already committed to join the new agreement period starting next year.
During the 2026–2035 period, companies aim to improve their energy efficiency by 10 percent, with progress scheduled to be reviewed in 2030.
Long tradition of voluntariness
Over the years, voluntary Energy Efficiency Agreements have evolved into a unique Finnish success story that is not found elsewhere in the world. Finland is one of the few European countries where voluntary agreements on energy efficiency are shown to work and yield profits.
The continuation of this voluntary initiative requires active participation from companies.
