The Finnish food industry is committed to taking an active role in tackling biodiversity loss, as a healthy natural environment is the foundation of the entire food system.
In a joint declaration published at the Nature Forum in Lahti on 8 September 2026, the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation committed to strengthening cooperation with Finland’s ten largest cities to support biodiversity. The aim of the cooperation is to turn shared nature-related goals into concrete action.
– The food industry depends on nature’s ability to provide raw materials. Safeguarding biodiversity is therefore essential to us. By working together with cities, we can accelerate practical solutions where they can have a significant impact, says Satumaija Levón, Director at the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation.
Cooperation between the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation and the cities will focus on reducing food waste and developing public food procurement. The aim is to identify ways to reduce waste throughout the food chain and to strengthen the consideration of biodiversity in public food procurement.
Public kitchens in Finland prepare approximately 383 million meals every year, meaning that cities’ food procurement decisions have a significant impact on the sustainability of the food system. The cooperation aims to build a shared understanding of impacts on nature and to develop effective and consistent approaches for taking these impacts into account in procurement.
