The aim of drawing up the roadmap is to identify potential bottlenecks related to operations, statutes, skills or other factors that are obstructing the growth of investments in research and development (R&D).
The food industry carries out extensive research, development and innovation (RDI) with the aim of developing new products, improving production processes, improving sustainability and meeting changing consumer needs.
On the initiative of Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation (ETL), a roadmap for RDI is now being drawn up by the food industry as the first sector in Finland to do so. The aim is to identify the ways of achieving the national goal of increasing RDI funding to four per cent in the food industry.
The aim of drawing up the roadmap is to identify potential bottlenecks related to operations, statutes, skills or other factors that are obstructing the growth of investments in research and development (R&D).
– The food industry wants to be a pioneer and pathfinder in terms of industry reform and improving the competitiveness of the food sector with innovations and by utilising new technology, says Mikko Käkelä, Managing Director of Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation.
To make the Finnish food industry more competitive, the share of national RDI funding received by the sector must be increased. Businesses must have certainty that research funding will develop in a predictable way and that the RDI funding allocated directly to businesses will be adequate.
– The criteria of Business Finland’s projects and funding must also ensure that sectors operating in the consumer and domestic markets will receive support for renewal, says director Marleena Tanhuanpää from Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation.
